Newcastle began life as a small settlement on the north bank of the River Tyne, roughly 250 miles north of London, in pre-Norman times. The Normans then built a fort (a New-castle) to protect a wooden bridge over the river.
Today Newcastle is a city of around 260,000 people, and is sometimes referred to as the unofficial capital of the North-East of England.
Another city, called Gateshead, with population around 190,000 people, has grown up on the other side (south bank) of the River Tyne, and the area as a whole is known as Tyneside.
Newcastle's "underground" system (The Tyne & Wear Metro) is a modern light rail system with 60 stations serving both the Tyneside area and the nearby city of Sunderland, and linking them both to the Newcastle International Airport.
According to a BBC publication, dated May 2008, the average house price in Newcastle was around £164,000. Properties in Gateshead were more affordable, averaging around £125,000.
Newcastle has its own professional football club, Newcastle United (also known as The Magpies, or The Toon). It currently plays in the premier league.
The Tyneside area has two universities, the long established Newcastle University and the more recently established Northumbria University. It also has a great many recruitment agencies.
