Liverpool, situated in the North West of England, on the estuary of the River Mersey, is one of England's major cities. As recorded in the 2001 census its population is around 440,000.

It has good nationwide motorway and rail connections, and a local area rail network called Mersey urban rail whose city centre sections are mostly underground. The Liverpool John Lennon Airport serves 64 destinations including key European cities such as  Paris, Berlin and Rome.

Data published by the BBC in May 2008 indicates that the average house price in Liverpool is around £126,000; there having been an 8.8% decrease in the previous quarter. In the surrounding districts of Sefton, Wirral, St. Helens, Halton and Knowlesly, the average prices varied between £165,000 and £124,000.
Liverpool has its own premier league professional football club, Liverpool F.C., and has been designated European capital of culture, 2008.
