A thousand years ago Leeds was just a small village of less than 200 people, situated in the heart of Yorkshire, on the banks of the River Aire, some 170 miles from London. But by the 16th / 17th century, thanks to the booming textile industry, it had grown to around 6000 people.
But then came the industrial revolution which brought rapid expansion and today, Leeds is a major English city with a population of around 450,000 in the urban area, and around 715,000 in the metropolitan borough.
Leeds is well served by both road and rail links being, in both cases, at the intersection of major East-West and North-South routes. Leeds Bradford International Airport is only 11 miles away.
According to data published by the BBC in may 2008, the average price of a house in Leeds was around £169,000, albeit after a decline of 3.9% in the previous quarter.
Leeds United Football Club play at Elland Road, and one can watch test cricket at Headingley. The city has two universities, and a large number of recruitment agencies.
