Edinburgh: the seat of the Scottish parliament and capital city of Scotland since 1437. According to the 2001 census it has a population of around 450,000.
Situated on the East coast, along the Firth of Fourth, Edinburgh acts as a hub for the transport systems of East Scotland. Road and rail connections with England and the rest of Scotland converge upon the city. One can fly from Edinburgh Airport, 8 miles west of the city, to destinations all over Europe, and in Canada and the USA.
Average house prices in the city of Edinburgh are some of the most expensive in Scotland. According to figures, published by the BBC in May 2008, that average price is around £208,000.
The city has two professional football clubs, "Hibernian (Hibs)" & "Heart of Midlothian (Hearts)", and the Scottish national rugby team plays at Murrayfield Stadium. It is also home to Edinburgh University, Heriot-Watt University, Napier University and Queen Margaret University.
It is said that Edinburgh has the strongest economy of any city in the UK, apart from London. It also has a multitude of recruitment agencies.
