Temporary recruitment agencies
To an employer, temporary recruitment agencies offer staff to fill shorter term employment needs.
To a candidate a temporary recruitment agencies offers work on relatively short term contracts. There are a wide variety of employment sectors this can apply to from Nursing to construction to seasonal jobs in tourism. In addition, temporary recruitment agencies can supply to any sector to cover the likes of maternity leave and sickness.
One of the first myths to clear up is that a temporary job is rarely a good stepping stone into a permanent job. It may be that you are filling a gap whilst someone is off sick or on maternity leave, when they return, your role is no longer there. If may be that an employer is experimenting with a new role in a company and has gone to temporary recruitment agencies to see if it will work. You may think here that if you do a good job, they will surely take you on? Wrong. Most temporary recruitment agencies build a hefty fee into their contract if the employers takes you on. If the position works, it's far better for them to look again and avoid the fee.
There are a number of benefits to temporary employment. Perhaps you don't want the commitment of a permanent role, maybe you're saving to go travelling, or working whilst studying for extra qualifications, or perhaps a sports person looking to earn some cash out of season whilst training. In these cases, temporary employment can be ideal. In some industries, although temporary employment has little security, it can pay better than permanent work. Examples of this are in medicine for Doctors and Nurses or in construction and the building trade, where not having the staff to meet deadlines can lead to heavy penalties, employers a re prepared to pay premiums to the staff.
Temping can also be an excellent means of gaining 'some' experience. Perhaps you're newly qualified and getting bounced at interviews for having no work experience. Temporary roles can be a good way of building experience and indeed begin to build a track record.
In summary, so long as you view temporary roles for what they are, that is, temporary, they can be a useful means of gaining experience and earning money. There are plenty of recruitment agencies out their to help you find this. These roles are, however, rarely an ideal stepping stone into permanent employment.
Good luck.
