Recruitment jobs and moving on up

If you are to progress in recruitment jobs there will be many variables determining your success. However, one thing is for sure, you will have to move across a number of recruitment companies on your pathway to the top.

Not only moving between different jobs in recruitment agencies increases your experiences but it will also enhance your ability to deliver the exceptional results required to promote upwards, and finally it will expose you to more opportunities as you look for bigger and better roles

.Deciding upon the precise timing of when to execute your moves can be delicate and dependant upon several factors. Too many moves and at the wrong time can look bad and arouse suspicion on the CV. Moving to the wrong company can also spell disaster, the phrase ‘out of the frying pan and into the fire’ springs to mind. Here's my top tips for moving jobs

Leaving in desperation and at short notice is always a bad idea . As a former recruitment consultant and recruiting manager, candidates should always be able to hang on while they are looking, unless there position has become untenable. If the latter is the case, the recruiter will be put off and assume there are negative and hidden reasons. Keep your head down and keep going until you find your next job, your position is so much stronger.

Don‘t resign until you have anew contract in your hand. Fining excuses to miss work can be both difficult and uncomfortable. However, interviewing whilst out of work is a whole new ball game, your position is infinitely weaker than while you are still working. Hang on at all costs, it will help you get a better job and a better salary.

Deciding to leave because your producing poor results is a recipe for failure. A good recruitment consultant and indeed a recruitment manager will spot this a mile off at interview. Even worse, recruitment is a small industry, if you get the job, word will leak back eventually that you weren’t perhaps doing so well and it will hurt your future. Try and turn around your fortunes first, then move on.

Money alone is a poor reason to move. You should of course look for a pay move when looking for new recruitment jobs. However, if it appears that money is the only driver here, they will guess that you will only hang around until you get your next best offer to move again. A safe bet here is 'career development' or 'seeking a new challenge' if you have been in you recruitment jobs for some years.

Conflict with your manager is also a poor reason to leave. It is, of course, difficult if you don‘t get on with your boss. However, moving will not necessarily solve this as you won‘t really be able to assess what you’re getting at the other end until it‘s too late. You may find your new manager is just the same, or indeed you may find your old boss ends up following you (I've seen this happen before :o( ) If this is the only problem, and everything else is okay, far better to deal with it, confront it, and try to minimise it. In itself, this is good practise, it’ll happen several times in your career on your way up the ladder.

Company issues. Some people panic when they see company changes coming and immediately call a recruitment consultant. Changes are not always bad news. With changes come opportunities and these may be the boost to your career you’re looking for. If you’re not so confident, set up some interviews as back up and keep your options open.

Above all, take your time, asses a broad selection of potential new recruitment jobs. The internet offers a wealth of knowledge, you should also speak to people in related recruitment jobs for advice. Speak to your family and friends who know you well but may be able to step back a little and offer a different opinion to help you make your way towards the right choice. The more people you speak to, the better informed your choice will be.

Good luck
