Is a recruitment job for you
A recruitment job is a game all on it’s own. It has elements of many roles within it. Turnover within the recruitment sector is traditionally high, but perhaps because of a poor understanding of what it entails rather than this being an unattractive profession to pursue.
On the contrary, there are many great attractions to recruitment.
The pros
- You are selling high value items (people!) for relatively large fees. There’s no better buzz than filling recruitment vacancies worth £1000s of which you will receive a healthy slice.
- Earnings are generally uncapped meaning your earnings can always get bigger and bigger as you get better and better.
- The foundations of success are effective relationships across a network of contacts which will grow over time….the longer you do it, the more you should earn.
- It’s a people business, if you like meeting and dealing with people, here you can get paid for it!
- If you’re an adrenaline junky, look no further, it’s a job that rewards high activity and high energy with success and money.
But beware, it’s not for the faint hearted, hence some don’t do it for that long, here’s some of the cons.
The cons
- Success requires you to persist with processes with inherent high failure rates which can be soul destroying. If you’re not built to take regular frustrations and disappointments on the road to success, it’s not for you.
- It’s office based. It might be an obvious statement, but some people are not built to sit behind a desk all day with a phone stuck to your ear. If you need to keep moving, get a field based sales job.
- Short cuts are the forbidden fruit. The best recruiters find their process including all the right ingredients and stick to it, no matter how tempting the short cuts. If you struggle with self discipline, perhaps recruitment isn’t for you.
-
Recruitment consultants will have a basic salary but commission payments may make up a large component of overall earnings. If you let it slip at any point, you’ll feel it in your pay as a result.
In summary, recruitment is a fast moving people business with plenty of potential to earn high salaries. If you are considering a recruitment career it may be the best move you ever make, but speak to people who are doing it already to hear it from the horse's mouth, if you are still interested, go for it!
Good luck.
